The sonic sound characteristics of the P2 are speed, detail and clarity, which are extending to the whole sound spectrum. Maybe this was the plan all along, perhaps they knew what they had going for them and decided to turn the whole market on its head. I am going to sing the praises of these IEM’s so blatantly and loudly that I expect plenty of people to be skeptical. Bass is more than sub-bass although I understand where people are coming from. Magnets on either side of this ultra-thin diaphragm produce strong magnetic fields to move the driver, theoretically with speedy-as-heck transient response times. It's a good size so the earphones are not having to be jammed inside and there is also room for a few extra ear tips and at a push perhaps a second cable. Inside the box, the earpieces rest in the foam tray with the case in a recess below. No I am not saying they are better than the SE846, UE11, W80, Andromeda Etc. That isn’t saying those details are not present, just that they are not forced forward into the mix where they are easily seen. This, in combination with the surprisingly small size, made them very easy to fit and a joy to use. The other thing I noticed while listening for stage is that the P1 has a larger than average stereo separation and that spread can be mistaken for stage at times. Well, no, and the treble is where the planar driver usually struggles and so does the P1, a little. The P1 has a single 10mm planar driver per side. https://www.samma3a.com/tech/en/product-reviews/tin-p1-review It is as linear as any I have heard in the class and might give the Empire ESR a run for its money at times (although I think the detail level of the ESR is considerably better than the P1). As far as I am concerned the 2 aren’t even in the same dimension. Guitar growl is quite good, but here again doesn’t linger long. In many ways, they are allowed to shine because the excellent bass doesn’t take center stage and the mids sit a little back from neutral. The main area where this giant-killing has raised its head has been inexpensive Chinese IEM’s taking on the mid-priced/low mid-priced earphones. I had someone ask about these or the DM6 and in my opinion its these every single time. So I split into those three categories as a priority for myself. The midrange is just extremely smooth. The P1 comes off as slightly dark due to the fact that we have grown accustomed to lower treble being pushed forward. Planar technology can be thought of as a dynamic driver that combines the voice-coil and diaphragm of a dynamic driver into a single unit which allows the diaphragm to move as a single unit, so air moves more evenly and transients are faster than a dynamic driver. The mids sit so perfectly in the overall presentation as well, they are beautiful, but they don’t fight for dominance they don’t suffer from an upper mid spike and the is absolutely zero encroachment into them from the low end. The P1 is a fantastic way for a beginner to get acquainted with the sound of planar magnetic. It is priced at $169. It features an ultra-thin but flexible diaphragm unit producing a smooth sound output with rich clarity. Surely I am joking the Tin Hifi P1 can’t compete with the top of the line IEM’s? At any price? It was immediate when getting into the listening portion of the review that we see that the planar technology in the P1 isn’t just snake oil. The TIN HiFi P2 is the successor of the popular P1 In-Ear Monitor and comes with a 12mm Planar Magnetic Driver that was been integrated to a monitor shell with a solid look & feel. The Case is leather wrapped on the exterior and suede on the interior with a magnetic closure and fits the P1 well but leaves little room for additional tips or other items. Lately, a few manufacturers are dipping their toe in the water with planar magnetic designs, and even Shure has put out an electrostatic earphone. When something is so good, and people praise it so highly, it often gets overlooked in disbelief that its a hype train, but in my mind, these are the real deal. The metal construction inspires a lot of confidence as to the long term durability of the IEM and the medium length tubes and grills are also constructed of metal.
